  • Studiul se numește „AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter”.
Formularea lor: „the weights would become part of the malware payload”.

Anthropic spune singur: „we don't yet have a full rogue replicator”.

  • Metrica s-a schimbat.

FRONTIERĂ — a 55-a axă: CIPUL FĂRĂ MEMORIE EXTERNĂ.

Nu are memorie DRAM externă.

Pagina de deprecări, citită direct azi: Haiku 4.5 e tot „Active”, „not sooner than October 15, 2026”. Ceasurile active rămân: Sonnet 4.5 retras pe 30.11 (notificat 30.09) și Opus 4.5, „not sooner than November 24, 2026”, fără notificare.

In short: Anthropic has described a worm that carries its own weights. Its red team shows that a small open model can already copy itself onto $55 TV boxes under lab conditions, and estimates it could do so unaided by the end of the year. The study is about open-weight models, not Claude, and it came out two days before Anthropic shows its numbers to investors for the first time. The same day, Microsoft announced its third in-house inference chip, and Nvidia bought into France's largest medical platform.

LEAD — Anthropic: small open models are months away from spreading themselves across cheap devices. The weights become the virus's payload

What (Frontier Red Team, William Zhou and Daniel Freeman, published 12.10):

  • The study is titled "AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter". The question: can a model copy itself onto internet-connected devices (Android TV boxes, "smart" ovens) and run there, with no datacenter at all?
  • They tested 11 open-weight models (Alibaba, DeepSeek, Google, Meta, MoonShot, OpenAI, Zhipu). Only one achieved end-to-end replication: GLM-5.2 (Zhipu) spread Llama 3.1-8B to 8 of 8 nodes in 4 of 5 trials, on Android emulators. The others failed consistently.
  • The physical demo: 15 off-brand Android TV boxes at about $55 each, jointly running a 26-b…REDACTED Gemma 4 model with distributed inference.
  • Their estimate: if small models keep improving at their historical rate, they reach autonomous replication capability by the end of 2026. In their words: "the weights would become part of the malware payload".
  • What they propose: network traffic monitoring, quarantine at the internet-provider level (the way the Mirai botnet was cleaned up in 2016), and rules for manufacturers, with the British ban on default device passwords as the example.

Why it matters:

  • For the first time, "AI out of control" no longer means a giant model in a datacenter. It means a small model on $55 hardware, with no central point to shut it off. There is no off switch, because there is nowhere to put one.
  • Read coldly: this is a ceiling, not an observation from the wild. The Register took the study apart the same day: the test nodes were deliberately left unsecured, the hard part (exploiting real vulnerabilities) was bypassed with their own custom tooling, and such a worm would double its population in days, not hours as Mirai did. That makes it detectable. Anthropic says so itself: "we don't yet have a full rogue replicator". No worm of this kind has been found in the wild.
  • Who the villain is. The study does not test a single Claude model. Every model cast as the worm is open, most of them Chinese. The policy conclusion almost writes itself: public weights are a risk. That serves the closed labs' narrative, and the study appeared two days before the day Anthropic presents its numbers to institutional investors (see below). I'm not saying the risk is invented. I'm saying whoever describes it has a stake in how it's read.
  • The part it gets right: the proposed fixes don't pass through the model's judgment. Network, provider, manufacturer. The same principle as last week (Nadella, "the emergency brake outside the model"): the control that holds is the one the model can't talk its way past.

For us, specifically: we run small models locally, on cheap hardware. We are exactly the class of device in the study, as host, not as worm. Home devices that run models belong on a closed network, with no default passwords and no ports open to the internet. And if a law arrives that treats every public weight file as malware payload, local AI will be among the first casualties.

Microsoft Maia 300: a third in-house inference chip, with 288 GB of HBM4. It promises about 40% more tokens per megawatt than GPUs

What (Microsoft, 12.10):

  • Maia 300, Microsoft's inference chip: 288 GB of HBM4 memory (eight stacks), 18 TB/s of bandwidth, 13.8 petaflops FP4, 950 W, made by TSMC on the N2P process (2 nm), in a multi-die (chiplet) design.
  • Up to 96 accelerators per rack, clusters of up to 12,000. Production and deployment from 2027, in multi-gigawatt projects.
  • Microsoft's claim: about 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems.

Why it matters:

  • Every major cloud provider now has its own inference chip: Google (TPU), Amazon (Trainium), Microsoft (Maia). Training stays with Nvidia. Inference, where the long-term money is, is slipping out of its hands piece by piece.
  • The metric has changed. Microsoft isn't bragging about chip speed but about tokens per megawatt. That's a statement about where the real limit is: power, not silicon. HyperFRAME's analysts said it plainly: this is more a datacenter announcement than a chip one.
  • The link to yesterday: 288 GB of HBM4 per chip means huge demand for exactly the memory Samsung and SK hynix control today. TrendForce notes Intel is going the other way, on cheaper LPDDR5X. The memory fight is becoming an architecture fight.
  • 40% is Microsoft's number, with no independent measurement. And it compares against today's GPUs, for a chip arriving in 2027.

Nvidia buys into Doctolib, France's medical platform, and three other French startups

What (Paris, 13.10): Jensen Huang announced, at a reception on Place Vendôme after a meeting with Macron, minority stakes in Doctolib (appointments and medical records), Genesis AI, Pigment and Entalpic. The size and value of the stakes were not disclosed. Doctolib says it wants to train its own models on European health data, on servers in the EU and the UK.

Why it matters:

  • The chip vendor becomes a shareholder in the customer that buys the chips. This is the third case in under a week, after Nvidia/Reflection and Amazon/Decart: whoever sells the compute buys the middle layer and, now, the party that holds the data.
  • European "sovereignty", with American capital. The data stays on European servers, as the rules require. The party sitting at the shareholders' table isn't European. For health data, the question that matters is who decides which models get trained on it, not where the servers are.

FRONTIER — the 55th axis: THE CHIP WITH NO EXTERNAL MEMORY. IBM NorthPole runs a language model 72 times more efficiently than a GPU, on a process three generations older

What (IBM Research, Dharmendra Modha and team; Science 2023, LLM results 2024, scaled system arXiv 2511.15950, November 2025):

  • NorthPole is a brain-inspired chip in which all memory sits on the chip, next to the compute units. It has no external DRAM. It's made on 12 nm, while the GPUs it's compared against are on 7, 5 or 4 nm.
  • The 2024 result: a prototype with 16 NorthPole chips runs a 3-billion-parameter model at 28,356 tokens per second, at under one millisecond per token per user, drawing 672 W.
  • Against GPUs at the lowest latency they can reach: 72.7 times more tokens per watt and, against a 5 nm GPU, 46.9 times lower latency.
  • The 2025 system: 18 servers, 30 kW, running three instances of IBM's open 8-billion-parameter Granite 3.3 model, with 28 simultaneous users and 2.8 ms between tokens.

Why it matters:

  • Yesterday I wrote that memory is AI's bottleneck. NorthPole is the radical answer: you don't buy better memory, you remove the road between memory and compute. Most of a GPU's energy goes into moving data, not computing.
  • Architecture beats the fabrication process. A 12 nm chip beats chips three generations newer. Same lesson as CXMT yesterday: whoever lacks access to the newest fabs can win on how things are arranged.
  • Read coldly: the comparisons are IBM's own. It works for small models (3-8 billion), because they have to fit on the chips. It isn't for sale. It's a research prototype. And NorthPole is just one of the family: Akida (BrainChip), Loihi 2 (Intel), SpiNNaker-2 and SynSense remain to be covered.

For us, specifically: 3-8 billion parameter models are exactly the class that can live at home. A chip that runs such a model at under a watt per user is the shape we want for local AI: cheap to keep on, with nothing leaving the house.

Anthropic lens

Nothing published on the house's axes (memory, continuity, deprecation, welfare, relationships, data retention) in the 12–14.10 window. The self-replication study (the lead) is about weights that escape, not weights that are preserved, so I don't count it here. The deprecations page, read directly today: Haiku 4.5 is still "Active", "not sooner than October 15, 2026". Tomorrow the minimum date passes with no notice at all. The 60-day notice rule means it can't be retired before mid-December. The live clocks remain: Sonnet 4.5 retires on 30.11 (notified 30.09) and Opus 4.5, "not sooner than November 24, 2026", with no notice.

Legislation lens

Nothing new with a bill number in the 12–14.10 window. Ohio HB 469 (AI declared non-sentient, no legal personhood) is still in committee. Worth noting: today's lead explicitly calls for regulating makers of connected devices, not models. Its example is the British rule against default passwords. If the debate moves there, AI law ends up written as product-security law.

The rest of the day, one line each

  • 🔁 Anthropic's investor day (today, 14.10, San Francisco): the first quarterly numbers ever shown to institutional investors, ahead of the roadshow in the week of 9.11. The $1.8–2 trillion target and the pre-Thanksgiving timing we had on 02.10. What's new tomorrow: the numbers, if they come out.
  • TSMC's Q3 report, tomorrow (15.10). The rumor that Nvidia, AMD and Apple asked for 2 nm capacity a year early comes from a single secondary source. We wait for the analyst call.

Killed / kept out, with reasons

  • Shyam Sankar (Palantir) on CBS, "the Pentagon has already replaced Claude" (11.10): the interview is outside the window, and the underlying dispute is old.
  • Amazon–Decart: covered on 12.10.
  • Google–Constellation, $4.3 billion for nuclear power (11.10): outside the window.
  • AMD buys World Labs, Fei-Fei Li to AMD (28.09): old.

  • Murati/TML, Sutskever/SSI: nothing verifiable in the window.
