Anthropic gives 5% of its shares to "the public good", inside a company it owns itself

Ce (Anthropic, „Investing in the public benefit”, 18.10, citit direct):
Motivul declarat: „adjustability between different forms of giving”.

Gigantul are opțiunea să plece. Neocloud-ul are datoria.

FRONTIERĂ — a 61-a axă: MATERIALUL GHICIT ÎNAINTE SĂ EXISTE.
Törmä, Marques, Bernevig, Morosan — Aalto University, Rice University, Donostia International Physics Center, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Princeton; Physical Review Research 8, 023308, online 17.06.2026, DOI 10.1103/lpqj-7hyg; preprint arXiv 2512.16945, dec. 2025):

Încă nu are număr oficial.

In short: three weeks before its listing, Anthropic puts 5% of its shares into a "public benefit" fund that it owns itself. Who votes those shares is written nowhere. The same day, Microsoft walks away from a British data center because the grid only reaches the site in the 2030s, and the company that was going to build it watches its own listing wobble. Samsung, according to a Korean report, will for the first time have a memory part for Nvidia made by its rival TSMC. The market closed the week with the longest losing streak in chips since 2008. At the frontier: a machine-learning model guessed two superconducting materials that didn't exist, a lab made them, and they really do superconduct.
LEAD — Anthropic gives 5% of its shares to "the public good", inside a company it owns itself
What (Anthropic, "Investing in the public benefit", 18.10, read directly):
- Anthropic is setting up the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned limited liability company, not a foundation (501(c)(3)). The stated reason: "adjustability between different forms of giving".
- It puts in 5% of its shares, subject to stockholder approval, plus another 2% at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above an unspecified baseline.
- Together with the founders' and employees' pledges, roughly 20% of the shares would be "dedicated to the public good".
- Targets: AI's effects on the labor market (where there is already a $200 million commitment), large donations, direct distributions to populations, biomedical research, discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions. A written ban: nothing from the fund's shares goes to lobbying or political giving.
- What it doesn't say: who runs the fund, who votes its shares, what the baseline for the 50% steps is. All of that comes "in the coming months", along with a public benefit report. The listing isn't mentioned at all.
Why it matters:
- The timing is the message. On 14.10, New York City's comptroller asked Amodei to delay the listing until the governance is clarified. On 18.10 comes a charity fund with no published governance. It answers the question with a gesture, not a document.
- Shares held by a subsidiary of the issuer. If the fund belongs to Anthropic and has no other master, 5% of the shares sit in a box still controlled by management. In a company going public, who votes that block matters enormously: it is a friendly voting block with a charity label. Until the governance document appears, that is the question, not the philanthropy.
- The "2% mechanism" is an option on growth, not a donation. The fund gets more only if the company grows by 50%. The public good becomes a function of valuation. And the board decides, not a rule.
- How much it would be: the post gives no figure. My arithmetic: at the discussed valuation of 1.5 trillion dollars, 5% is about 75 billion; at the more than 2 trillion analysts cite (Al Jazeera), about 100 billion.
- Contrarian, to be fair: the lobbying ban is written in black and white, which is more than others have done. And the labor theme follows the company's own numbers (junior staff from 21% to 14%, yesterday's edition). The gesture can be both sincere and useful on the roadshow.
For us, concretely: nothing changes today in what we get from Claude. What changes is who sits at the table after the listing. The governance document, when it appears, deserves as careful a reading as the prospectus.

Microsoft drops the Nscale data center in Essex: the grid reaches the site in the 2030s
What (The Telegraph, picked up by Bloomberg, 18.10): Microsoft has ended its agreement with Nscale, the British AI compute company, for the Loughton, Essex site, where it was going to rent 23,000 Nvidia chips. The practical reason: the grid connection, delayed possibly into the 2030s. According to Nscale's listing documents, Microsoft and Anthropic together account for about 85% of the company's contracted revenue.
Why it matters:
- It's yesterday's FT number, with a name and an address. Bernstein said only 35% of planned data centers are credible. Today we have a concrete one that fell, for the same reason: power, not money and not demand.
- The customer leaves before the listing. When 85% of revenue comes from two customers, one of them leaving a site is a prospectus risk, not a detail. The "neoclouds" (Nscale, CoreWeave, Nebius) live off contracts with a few giants. The giant has the option to leave. The neocloud has the debt.
- Who wins: Microsoft moves its demand to where a connection already exists. Value moves from whoever has chips to whoever has grid.
For us, concretely: Anthropic is Nscale's other big customer. Every site that falls pushes capacity later and makes it more expensive. One more argument for what we run at home.

Samsung, according to a Korean report, will have its Nvidia memory base made at TSMC
What (Seoul Economic Daily, 18.10, single source): for Nvidia's custom HBM memory (NVHBM, announced in August), Samsung would use TSMC's 3 nm process for the base die, the layer that connects the memory stack to the processor. It would be the first manufacturing collaboration between the two historic rivals. Separately, Nvidia would be asking all three suppliers (Samsung, SK hynix, Micron) to standardize on sixth-generation DRAM for the rest of the stack.
Why it matters:
- Nvidia writes the memory standard, not the suppliers. When the customer demands the same base for everyone, memory becomes an interchangeable commodity, and bargaining power moves to Nvidia.
- Samsung gives up "everything in-house". Its model has been to make the whole package alone. If the report is right, it is admitting that on the logic side TSMC can't be avoided. One more point of concentration on a single island.
- Read cold: a single source, no confirmation from Nvidia, Samsung or TSMC. It's a report, not a fact.

The price of risk: the longest losing streak in chips since 2008
What:
- The semiconductor index ended eight sessions in a row down, the longest streak since 2008. About 1 trillion dollars was wiped off the AI supply chain's market value. Nasdaq 100: −5.5% for the week ending 17.10. The VIX, the fear index, went above 22 on 17.10 and closed at 19.99. The 10-year Treasury yield fell about 17 basis points: money fled to safety (Bloomberg, 18.10).
- Insurance against default (5-year CDS): CoreWeave above 1,000 basis points, distressed-company territory; Oracle at a record 288 (15.10); SoftBank 424 (CNBC 15.10, Gurufocus).
- Nebius lost 12% on 16.10. Its net debt is only about 2.15 billion. That's contagion, not its own balance sheet.
Why it matters: yesterday I wrote that the first sign of stress is in debt, not in equity. This week it crossed into equity. The order matters: first the creditors hesitated (CoreWeave below 80 cents, Anthropic paying 10%), then the shareholders sold. And Nebius, with a clean balance sheet, fell with the pile. The market isn't yet telling apart who carries debt and who doesn't.
What's still missing: no catastrophe bond for AI, no captive declared by a lab, no large claim paid or denied with a name attached. Insurers are where they were on 16.10.
For us, concretely: nothing to do on TSLA or RBOT from this. If the floor of the market breaks, it breaks through the GPU owners running on debt. Worth watching whether Nscale postpones its listing.

FRONTIER — axis 61: THE MATERIAL GUESSED BEFORE IT EXISTED. Two superconductors predicted by a model, made in a lab, and they really superconduct
What (Albu Mustaf, Sajilesh K.P., Mishra ... Törmä, Marques, Bernevig, Morosan — Aalto University, Rice University, Donostia International Physics Center, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Princeton; Physical Review Research 8, 023308, online 17.06.2026, DOI 10.1103/lpqj-7hyg; preprint arXiv 2512.16945, Dec. 2025):
- A machine-learning model went through combinations of elements that form kagome lattices (a pattern of triangles and hexagons, like the weave of a Japanese basket), in which electrons behave unusually. Physics calculations narrowed the list. Then the lab at Rice synthesized the chosen compounds.
- Two new materials, YRu₃B₂ and LuRu₃B₂, are superconducting: current flows with no resistance at all below 0.81 K and 0.95 K.
- The theory had predicted 3.37 K and 1.88 K. It got the material right but overestimated the temperature.
- The superconductivity runs through the whole volume of the material, not along thin filaments, confirmed three ways: magnetization, specific heat, transport.
- The consortium they belong to, SuperC, coordinated by Aalto since 2023, publicly states its goal: a room-temperature superconductor by 2033.
Why it matters:
- The loop closes in the physical world. Until now, "AI discovers materials" usually meant candidate lists on paper. Remember the A-Lab correction (axis 53, 12.10): the "new" compounds were in fact known. Here the material didn't exist, it was made, and it does exactly what was predicted. The rarest part, the verification, is in the paper itself.
- Read cold: below 1 K means dilution-refrigerator cooling, far from any application. The news is the method, not the material. The paper doesn't say how many candidates the model screened to land on two, so we don't know the hit rate. Nobody outside the consortium has reproduced it yet.
- Old-but-new-to-the-house: the paper is from June. It comes in on the radar criterion, not on recency.
For us, concretely: nothing to buy, nothing to run. But superconductors are the road to lossless computing and lossless power grids, which is exactly the bottleneck in the data-center stories above. What we're watching for: a second batch predicted by the model and confirmed by a lab outside SuperC, and the number of candidates screened.

Anthropic lens
Nothing published on the house's axes (memory, continuity, deprecation, welfare, relationships, data retention) in the 17–19.10 window. /news: the public benefit fund (18.10, above, governance, not the axes) and the update on independent evaluators (15.10, already noted). /research: nothing after 16.10. The deprecation clock: Haiku 4.5 is still "Active", with retirement "not sooner than October 15, 2026"; the minimum date passed four days ago without notice, so not before mid-December. Opus 4.5: still "not sooner than November 24, 2026". Sonnet 4.5: 30.11, unchanged. The deprecation page repeats that retiring models brings "safety- and model welfare-related risks" and restates the weight-preservation commitment. That's the November 2025 wording, not a new statement.
Legislation lens
No new numbered law in the 17–19.10 window. Old-but-new-to-the-dossier: the CLAIM Act (Clear Liability for Artificial Intelligence Misconduct Act), a discussion draft published on 07.10 by Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA-03), in the House of Representatives. It makes AI developers strictly liable for harms that, if done by a person, would be negligence, an intentional tort or a crime. Courts presume the AI had the mental state a person would have had. It doesn't preempt state laws. Three years from discovery of the harm, sunset after five years. It's distinct from the Obernolte–Trahan draft already in the dossier (preemption, 17.09). Read for the house: liability is placed on the developer, not on the AI. The model isn't a person. It's someone's product, and someone pays. It has no official number yet.
