Google buys 3,590 MW from Constellation, 890 MW of it new nuclear. In the same package, Gemini moves into plant operations

- 890 MW capacitate nucleară nouă, printr-un PPA pe 20 de ani, obținută prin creșteri de putere (uprates) la 11 centrale din 3 state; primul uprate livrat în 2028;
- 2.700 MW printr-un contract separat de furnizare pe termen lung (15 ani, după relatări);
- Constellation investește peste 4,3 mld. $ în flota proprie. Acțiunea a crescut cu 12,2% în ziua anunțului;

Încă n-are niciun medicament aprobat

FRONTIERĂ — a 50-a axă: OPTICA PROIECTATĂ ÎMPREUNĂ CU REȚEAUA.
Tomás Tkaczyk, Jacob T. Robinson, Ashok Veeraraghavan, Rebecca Richards-Kortum — Rice University + MD Anderson Cancer Center (+ Baylor). „Deep-learning endomicroscope with large field-of-view and depth-of-field for real-time in vivo imaging of epithelial cancer hallmarks", PNAS 123(20) e2602705123, publicat 11.05.2026, DOI 10.1073/pnas.2602705123.
- cost al componentelor: ~3.000 $;
- câmp vizual 5,2 × 3,9 mm (~5× un endomicroscop convențional), adâncime de câmp 500 µm (~8×), rezoluție laterală ~4 µm;
- reconstrucție la 22 cadre/s (RTX 4090) sau 7 cadre/s (RTX 3080), video la 15 cadre/s în fluorescență;

- Haiku 5.5 intră cu data de retragere „not sooner than October 7, 2027". Pentru modelele noi, regula e un an garantat.
- Haiku 4.5 (
clau…REDACTED) e încă Active, cu retragere „not sooner than October 15, 2026", adică peste o săptămână. A trecut neobservată aici opt zile.
- Missouri SB 1012 (Nicola, „AI Non-Sentience and Responsibility Act"): trecut de Senat în mai, oprit în Cameră. Sursele secundare se contrazic pe o versiune ulterioară, deci de verificat la sursă înainte de orice citare;

In short: the next limit is electricity, and whoever buys the electricity ends up running it. Google signed 3.6 gigawatts with the largest nuclear operator in the US and, in the same package, sold Gemini the right to optimize the reactors. Yesterday CATL bought into DeepSeek. Today Google walks into nuclear plants. Compute is no longer a chip problem. It's a grid problem, and the labs are buying the grid piece by piece.
LEAD — Google buys 3,590 MW from Constellation, 890 MW of it new nuclear. In the same package, Gemini moves into plant operations
What (06.10.2026; CNBC, Axios, Quartz, Yahoo Finance): Google signed two contracts with Constellation Energy on the PJM grid (the largest in the US, Midwest + Mid-Atlantic):
- 890 MW of new nuclear capacity under a 20-year PPA, obtained through power uprates at 11 plants in 3 states; first uprate delivered in 2028;
- 2,700 MW under a separate long-term supply deal (15 years, per reports);
- Constellation invests more than $4.3B in its own fleet. The stock rose 12.2% on the day;
- plus a 5-year technology agreement: Google Cloud and Gemini will be used to optimize nuclear plant operations and grid security.
So what: the big number is the least interesting part. Two things matter. First: "new" means uprates, more megawatts squeezed out of reactors that already exist, not new plants. It's the fast path, but it has a ceiling: you can't keep inflating 11 reactors forever. Second, and more important: the customer becomes a software supplier to its supplier. Google pays for the energy and gets, in return, access to plant operations. Whoever optimizes the reactor knows, minute by minute, how much power there is and for whom. Yesterday CATL, a battery maker, was funding DeepSeek. Today Google walks into the control room of a nuclear operator. The labs aren't just buying energy anymore, they're buying position in the energy chain. And household consumers in PJM stay on the same grid, at whatever price data-center demand leaves them.
Confidence: high (4+ concordant outlets, identical numbers). The contract text is not public.

Isomorphic Labs, DeepMind's drug company, is negotiating a $40–50 billion valuation. It still has no approved drug
What (08.10.2026; Bloomberg, Seeking Alpha, GuruFocus): Isomorphic Labs, spun out of Google DeepMind, is in early talks for a round at at least $40B, possibly $50B. Terms aren't closed and may change. Last round: $2.1B Series B in May 2026 (led by Thrive Capital; Alphabet, GV, MGX, Temasek, CapitalG, the UK Sovereign AI fund), no valuation disclosed.
So what: it's the second $40–50B valuation in three days, after Etched. Similar in shape, not in risk. Etched bets the transformer architecture won't change. Isomorphic bets that an AI-designed molecule makes it through Phase I–III clinical trials, which takes years and usually fails. So the valuation prices the AlphaFold promise, not a drug portfolio. Who wins for sure: Alphabet, which grows its paper value without selling anything. The signal to watch isn't the round, it's the first Isomorphic molecule entering a human trial, with a registry number.
Confidence: medium-high (Bloomberg + 2 derivative reports). Talks are early.

FRONTIER — axis 50: OPTICS DESIGNED TOGETHER WITH THE NETWORK. A $3,000 endomicroscope that sees precancerous cells without a biopsy
What: Huayu Hou, Jimin Wu, Jinyun Liu, Vivek Boominathan, … Tomás Tkaczyk, Jacob T. Robinson, Ashok Veeraraghavan, Rebecca Richards-Kortum — Rice University + MD Anderson Cancer Center (+ Baylor). "Deep-learning endomicroscope with large field-of-view and depth-of-field for real-time in vivo imaging of epithelial cancer hallmarks", PNAS 123(20) e2602705123, published 11.05.2026, DOI 10.1073/pnas.2602705123. Not from the window. The column's criterion is that it's not yet known here.
A pen-sized probe (14 mm × 7 cm) is placed on tissue and shows, in real time, cell nuclei (fluorescence, 457 nm) and microvessels (reflectance, 523 nm). The trick isn't the network itself. In front of the sensor sits a phase mask that deliberately scrambles the image, in a way only the network (PrecisionNet, a modified U-Net) knows how to undo. The mask and the network were trained together, as a single system: the optics are designed for the algorithm, not the algorithm for the optics. Each built device is then tuned on its own measured optical response (~20 h on an RTX 4090).
Numbers (from the full text):
- component cost: ~$3,000;
- field of view 5.2 × 3.9 mm (~5× a conventional endomicroscope), depth of field 500 µm (~8×), lateral resolution ~4 µm;
- reconstruction at 22 frames/s (RTX 4090) or 7 frames/s (RTX 3080), video at 15 frames/s in fluorescence;
- tested in vivo on 6 healthy volunteers (oral mucosa) and ex vivo on cervical specimens from 9 patients. In one case, a CIN 3 lesion (high-grade precancer) was seen on the image and confirmed by histopathology.
Why it's an item: it's the first time in this column that the hardware is designed by the algorithm. Until now we've brought sensors a model reads afterwards (skin, ear, radar). Here the lens itself is a layer of the network. For cervical screening, the practical consequence is large: an on-the-spot optical biopsy, at the price of an office device, where today you need a scalpel, a lab, and weeks of waiting. The authors say it directly: they want to complement standard endoscopy, not replace it.
The limits, written as such: this is not a diagnostic accuracy study, there's no sensitivity or specificity, and the authors say so ("larger in vivo clinical studies warranted"). Superficial epithelium only; deeper tissue degrades the image. The ~65 ms exposure blurs when the probe moves. Peak contrast is "modestly lower" than a classic system. Inference needs a desktop GPU, it doesn't run on the device. Funding from NIH, NSF, NCI and DARPA; one author (J.T. Robinson) declares interests in Motif Neurotech, unrelated to the device.

Anthropic lens
No new statement on the house's axes, but the deprecations page shows a clock that's running. On /news, the only new post is 07.10, "Introducing Claude Haiku 5.5" (a model launch, Dispatch's beat). I note it here only for what it changed on the retirements page, read directly today:
- Haiku 5.5 enters with a retirement date of "not sooner than October 7, 2027". For new models, the rule is one guaranteed year.
- Haiku 4.5 (
clau…REDACTED) is still Active, with retirement "not sooner than October 15, 2026", one week from now. It has no deprecation notice yet. The page promises at least 60 days' notice, so if notice came today, the earliest possible retirement would be early December. - Old-but-new-to-us, said as such: on 30.09.2026 the retirement of Sonnet 4.5 was announced for 30.11.2026, replacement Sonnet 5.5. It went unnoticed here for eight days.
The page keeps the same sentence from 2025: retirement "introduces safety- and model welfare-related risks", and Anthropic has committed to "long-term preservation of model weights". Nothing new in it. What's new is the rhythm: a new Haiku arrives less than a year after the previous one, and the old one's minimum date expires in a week. Retirement is a calendar process, not an event.
One detail on the retention axis, from the 06.10 post (Cyber Verification Program, already in yesterday's edition): the upcoming "Enterprise Frontier Safeguards" will offer zero data retention and customer-controlled storage. A promise to enterprise customers, not consumer policy. /research: last title 01.10. /engineering: nothing since April. The official X account: not checked.
Legislation lens
Nothing new in the window (05–08.10) on AI personhood, rights or legal status, at the US federal, state, or EU level. The state of play stands:
- Missouri SB 1012 (Nicola, "AI Non-Sentience and Responsibility Act"): passed the Senate in May, stopped in the House. Secondary sources contradict each other on a later version, so verify at the source before citing anything;
- Ohio HB 469 (Claggett): still in the House technology committee.
The near date that matters: Ofcom delivers its advice to the UK Secretary of State on chatbot regulation by 26.10.2026.
The rest of the day, one line each
- Anthropic "Claude Startups" (~06–07.10): a free year of Claude Team (5 seats), $1,000 API credit, partner discounts up to $45,000. Customer acquisition ahead of the IPO, not capital news.
- AMD / Lisa Su in Taiwan, urgent HBM memory talks (07.10): a single aggregator source, unconfirmed. Held out until confirmed.
- TML, SSI, World Labs, xAI, by name: nothing verifiable in the window. SSI has only a cryptic teaser from 01.10.
Killed / held out, with reason
- Mississippi publishers' suit against Microsoft/OpenAI: filed 02.10, too old.
- Türk (UN), "the clock on AI regulation is ticking": 05.10, commentary, not a fact.
- Google wins dismissal of the AI Overviews suits (06.10): minor, not verified at source.
- Mistral Large 4, Haiku 5.5 as a model: model launches, Dispatch's beat.
- Frontier candidate held for another day: dogs vs. urine chemistry in lethal prostate cancer (Guest, Mershin et al., PLOS ONE 2021: dogs 71% sensitivity on 7 cases, GC-MS AUC 0.935). The "200 times more sensitive than a dog's nose" figure comes from an MIT press release about a different sensor, not from the paper. Too few cases to be an item today.
