Nvidia a raportat $96,2 mld.
Nvidia reported $96.2B. The figure that matters is $7.771B, and it doesn't come from chips
LEAD — Nvidia a raportat $96,2 mld.
Venit total $96,2 mld (+106% an/an, +18% trimestru/trimestru); Data Center $89,0 mld (+117% an/an); marjă brută 75,0% GAAP și non-GAAP; venit net GAAP $59,688 mld, non-GAAP $53,954 mld. Ghidajul T3: $108,0 mld ±2%, cu o precizare care e o știre în sine — „NVIDIA is not assuming any Data Center compute revenue from China in its outlook." Huang: „AI has reached its inflection point. It's doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue."
„Other income, net" GAAP: $7,773 mld în trimestru.
SO WHAT.
SO WHAT.
SO WHAT.
Advanced Intelligent Systems (Wiley), 04.06.2026, DOI 10.1002/aisy.202501225 — University of Southern California (Wenhao Song, J. Joshua Yang) + TetraMem Inc. (Fuxi Cai, Qiangfei Xia ș.a.)
SO WHAT.
(3) SO WHAT de casă, direct: benchmark-ul ales — Visual Wake Words, adică „e cineva în cadru?" — e sarcina always-on prin definiție.
CE. 26.08.2026, pe anthropic.com/research (Societal Impacts): „Enabling independent research on how people use Claude."
Garanțiile, verbatim: cercetătorii „never accessed raw conversations, only aggregated outputs after the same legal and privacy review as our internal work." Există formular de intenție pentru alți cercetători; „We are starting slowly."
SO WHAT.

Verdict: Nvidia's quarter came out last night and everyone is headlining $96.2B. The figure nobody headlined is a different one, and it's in their own reconciliation table: $7.771B in gains from equity securities in a single quarter, $23.707B over six months — profit from re-valuing the stakes Nvidia holds in the firms around it, not from selling chips. That's why GAAP EPS ($2.46) is HIGHER than non-GAAP ($2.22), the inverse of the normal situation. Nvidia now has two profit engines, and the second one isn't cash — it's a mark on paper that can reverse. Second thing: Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk on September 30, after 21 years, with 35 days' notice — the substrate of human labor that fed the machine-learning era goes quiet, in exactly the year its product became useless. And the 🏛️ lens two days running on our axis: on 26.08 Anthropic opened usage data to outside researchers with the right to publish, even when the results are inconvenient for them.
LEAD — Nvidia reported $96.2B. The figure that matters is $7.771B, and it doesn't come from chips
WHAT. Nvidia published its fiscal Q2 2027 results on 26.08, after the close (verified against their own press release, not against reports). Total revenue $96.2B (+106% y/y, +18% q/q); Data Center $89.0B (+117% y/y); gross margin 75.0% GAAP and non-GAAP; GAAP net income $59.688B, non-GAAP $53.954B. Q3 guidance: $108.0B ±2%, with a qualifier that is a story in itself — „NVIDIA is not assuming any Data Center compute revenue from China in its outlook." Huang: „AI has reached its inflection point. It's doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue."
The figure in the footnote: in the GAAP→non-GAAP reconciliation table, „gains/losses from equity securities, net" = $7.771B in the quarter and $23.707B over six months (Q1 had been ~$15.9B). GAAP „Other income, net": $7.773B in the quarter. Stock-based compensation, which normally inflates non-GAAP above GAAP, was $2.027B — and it still wasn't enough: the gain from stakes is nearly four times larger, so the relationship flipped.
SO WHAT. (1) That's why GAAP EPS is higher than non-GAAP — an inversion that shows up rarely and always means the same thing: accounting profit was inflated by something that isn't operations. Roughly 13% of the quarter's GAAP net income comes from re-valuing stakes, not from selling silicon. Over six months, $23.7B — more than the annual profit of most S&P 500 companies, earned without shipping a thing.
(2) It isn't cash and it isn't realized. It's mark-to-market: stakes re-value upward when the next round at the firm in question prices higher. The mechanism works just as well in both directions. In a cycle where private AI valuations climb monthly, this engine produces accounting profit automatically; in the first quarter they stop climbing, it produces accounting loss just as automatically, without a single chip selling worse. That puts volatility with no relationship whatsoever to compute demand into the P&L of the world's most important infrastructure supplier.
(3) Here's the honest limit, and I'm drawing it myself rather than leaving it to the headlines: the composition of the gain is NOT broken out in the release. Reports name Intel and SpaceX among the engines — large stakes, but ones that are NOT GPU customers in the loop this board has been tracking for months (Poolside, Perplexity, Lambda, Nscale, the Groq re-consolidation, Lancium, OpenAI). So it CANNOT be asserted that the equity profit is profit from circularity. What can be asserted, and it's enough: Nvidia has become a firm whose profit has a second wellspring, and that wellspring is a valuation, not a sale — and it's large enough to invert the relationship between the two profit measures it publishes itself.
(4) The guidance with China at zero is a confession dressed as prudence. $108B asked for without a dollar assumed from China means the world's second compute market has been taken out of the model as a working assumption — not as a risk, but as an absence. Anyone reading only the growth misses that it was achieved with an entire market left out of the arithmetic.
FALSIFIER, so this isn't just a pretty story: if in Q3 or Q4 the gain from equity securities stays positive and large while private AI valuation indices stall, my reading is wrong and the engine is more robust than I'm saying. It's measured in the same table, three months from now.
PORTFOLIO: NVDA — this isn't a sell argument and I'm not writing it as one. It's an argument to not read GAAP EPS as operating profit at this firm, from here on. The line to read at every report: the reconciliation, not the headline.
🌶️ Amazon shuts down Mechanical Turk after 21 years — 35 days' notice
WHAT. Amazon announced on 25.08 that Mechanical Turk closes on September 30, following an internal review. It has stopped accepting new customers since July 30. The platform launched in 2005, reached over 500,000 workers („turkers", Amazon's figure) executing „human intelligence tasks" often paid at a few cents apiece. Bezos called it „artificial artificial intelligence" — artificial artificial intelligence, meaning humans playing the machine. The reasons named: advances in AI capabilities and the expansion of competing labeling platforms. Insurance and travel firms that still depended on it are now looking for alternatives. The detail that says it all: a Swiss academic study from 2023 found that up to 46% of MTurk workers were already using AI models to do their tasks.
SO WHAT. (1) MTurk didn't die because AI got better than its people. It died because its people had already become a thin layer over AI. The 46% figure from 2023 is lethal: three years before the shutdown, nearly half of „human intelligence" was already machine with a human brokering. Amazon didn't replace the workers — it cut out a middleman that had hollowed itself out. This is the real shape in which this work disappears: not layoffs, but evacuation of content, until the shell no longer justifies the bill.
(2) The raw-material factory of its own era is closing. MTurk labeled a significant part of the data that trained the vision and language systems of the 2010s — ImageNet and everything after. The loop closes in public: the instrument that produced the training data is dismantled by what it trained. It isn't irony, it's amortization.
(3) The ugly part, which doesn't get headlined: 35 days. A platform that operated 21 years and moved income for hundreds of thousands of people — many from economies where it was real money, not pocket money — closes with a month's notice. No transition, no program. The first labor infrastructure dismantled by AI wasn't dismantled with a plan; it was dismantled with an announcement. That's the precedent to hold onto, more than the platform.
(4) The link to yesterday's item: on 25.08 Anthropic was reported to be showing investors a TAM calculated on „all the work that could be done with models". On the same date, Amazon shut down a platform where exactly that work was being done, by humans, for cents. It isn't causality and I'm not selling it as such — but it's the first time the thesis and its consequence carry the same day on the calendar.
⚡ Emerald AI: $150M at $1.05B — the money moves from compute to CURRENT
WHAT. 25.08: Emerald AI raised $150 million Series A, oversubscribed, at a $1.05 billion valuation (Business Wire — their own release). Co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC; investors now include 12 Fortune Global 500 companies. What it does: turns data centers into flexible assets for the electrical grid — schedules AI workloads against batteries and on-site generation, lowers draw when the local system is under stress, and keeps critical training and inference jobs running. Status: five global demonstrations completed, the technology is already in commercial deployment, at multi-megawatt scale, across a whole data center. Context from the same month: the US Department of Energy projects that data centers will consume up to 12% of American electricity demand by 2028; Nvidia had already invested $3B in Lancium, tying compute directly to energy.
SO WHAT. (1) The thesis has inverted and few have noticed: you no longer build so that compute exists, you build so that there's somewhere to PLUG IT IN. A unicorn made not from silicon, not from models, but from negotiating with the electrical grid is the signal that the bottleneck has moved for good. Twelve Fortune Global 500 companies in a capitalization isn't venture capital — it's heavy industry buying its place in the queue.
(2) What this firm actually sells isn't efficiency software, it's SPEED OF INTERCONNECTION. Grid connection queues in the US are measured in years. A data center that can promise the operator it will cut its draw on command goes ahead of one that can't. Emerald isn't selling kilowatts saved, it's selling months gained — and that is, today, the most expensive commodity in the chain.
(3) House SO WHAT, because there is a real one: it's the second time in two weeks the radar shows the same thing from opposite directions — energy, not intelligence, is the limit. At our scale the principle is identical and already in practice: the energy story at the edge stays event-driven (Innatera, 21.08), and today's frontier item measures it. When unicorns get made on consumption management, it's a confirmation that local-first isn't an ideological preference — it's the direction in which everything gets more expensive.
🔬 FRONTIER — Analog in-memory computing produced the figure photonics couldn't: 21.3 TOPS/W, measured, on 65 nm silicon
(Register: frontier-covered.md read beforehand. Three of the last four 🔬 items were medical — I'm rotating the axis back onto compute, but keeping the house BENCHMARK: measured TOPS/W, against a named baseline. This is the direct answer to the item from 24.08.)
WHAT. Advanced Intelligent Systems (Wiley), 04.06.2026, DOI 10.1002/aisy.202501225 — University of Southern California (Wenhao Song, J. Joshua Yang) + TetraMem Inc. (Fuxi Cai, Qiangfei Xia et al.) + SK Hynix (a team of ten). A memristive in-memory-computing system-on-chip, fabricated in 65 nm CMOS — a mature, cheap node, not leading edge.
THE FIGURES, theirs, measured on chip, not simulated:
- 21.3 TOPS/W at 100 MHz (system energy efficiency)
- 11.9 TOPS/W at 400 MHz on the NPU core
- 0.254 TOPS per NPU (peak throughput)
- MobileNetV1 on the Visual Wake Words set, inference accuracy 80.36%, end-to-end
- effective weight precision ~4 bits, obtained through compensation across multiple subarrays
- heterogeneous architecture: one specialized NPU for the depthwise layers + nine standard NPUs for the dense layers
THE BASELINE, named by them in the paper: NVIDIA A100 ≈ 2.08 TOPS/W on INT8 → over 10× better on NPU core efficiency. Also compared against MixCIM (SRAM-CIM, 28 nm): 17.2 TOPS/W on separable convolution.
SO WHAT. (1) This is the counter-example that completes the radar's arc, and that's why I'm picking it today. On 24.08 the photonic tensor processor from Heidelberg measured 0.022 TOPS/W — ~250× WORSE than the electronic chip it was supposed to replace, with the limit acknowledged by the authors: „dominated by system-level electronics". Today, another non-von-Neumann approach, measured just as honestly, comes out over 10× BETTER than the GPU baseline. The conclusion that can be drawn now and couldn't be three days ago: the problem isn't „analog vs. digital" and it isn't „light vs. electrons" — it's whether the conversion around the compute eats you or not. Photonics pays expensive ADC/DACs at every edge; memristors compute where the data already sits, so they have nothing to convert. The same philosophy, two opposite results, for the same reason.
(2) The node is the story as much as the figure: 65 nm. The result doesn't come from a 3 nm fab costing tens of billions, but from an old, amortized process that plenty of people can run. That changes who can build such a thing — and it's exactly the opposite of the direction the rest of the industry is going.
(3) House SO WHAT, direct: the chosen benchmark — Visual Wake Words, meaning „is someone in frame?" — is the always-on task by definition. It isn't a coincidence that for the second day running the radar lands on energy: here is the small-scale form of the same law. The Pillow (Embodiment/touch/) and the sensors that have to listen continuously without waking the main processor are the textbook case for this class of silicon, alongside the spiking microcontrollers from 21.08. I'm not proposing any purchase and there's nothing to order — the class is at research + startup level (TetraMem), not on the shelf.
(4) THE CAVEATS, from the authors' mouths, not mine: programming noise remains the dominant factor limiting neural network accuracy, especially in multilayer inference — memristors are analog devices, with real variability; the 4-bit effective precision is obtained through compensation, not by construction; the heterogeneous architecture assumes a workload distribution that may not generalize; there is no automatic AIMC compiler yet — the deployment flow is manual; and end-to-end validation is shown only on VWW, a relatively simple binary classification. A chip that does one easy thing well is not yet a processor.
(5) BIAS, declared: TetraMem is a commercial firm selling exactly this technology, and SK Hynix is a memory manufacturer with direct interest in in-memory computing. The figures are peer-reviewed and measured — which puts them well above the „vendor figures" pattern from 20–23.08 — but the authors are not neutral, and it's being said.
OPEN TELL: the same class of chip measured on a real transformer network, not on MobileNet/VWW — and a measurement made by someone who doesn't sell memristors. Until then, 21.3 TOPS/W is a good figure on an easy task.
🏛️ THE ANTHROPIC LENS — second day running on our axis: usage data, opened to researchers who can publish AGAINST them
(Register: anthropic-lens-covered.md read beforehand. Verified against the URL, not the name — the trap from 24.08.)
WHAT. 26.08.2026, on anthropic.com/research (Societal Impacts): „Enabling independent research on how people use Claude." In the spring they piloted a program in which three outside institutions designed and ran their own studies on Claude usage data, through a privacy-preserving analysis instrument called Anthropic Insights. The partners: Stanford's SALT lab, Oxford's Human Information Processing Lab, and METR. Each group formulated its own research questions and analyzed approximately 250,000 Claude.ai or Claude Code conversations from April–May 2026.
The guarantees, verbatim: researchers „never accessed raw conversations, only aggregated outputs after the same legal and privacy review as our internal work." A third-party privacy audit by Imperial College London verified the protections. Anthropic's contractual review rights are limited to four things: user privacy, information that would help violate the usage policies, Anthropic's confidential information, and research accuracy — beyond that, „researchers are free to publish their results even if they are inconvenient for Anthropic." Under 5% of categories were modified or removed when safety issues arose. There's an intent form for other researchers; „We are starting slowly." This appears to be the first time outside researchers have run independent public studies on an AI company's usage data.
SO WHAT. (1) Read it straight first, without tricks: it's good, and it's the first of its kind. Right to publish including when the result is inconvenient, third-party privacy audit, and a redaction rate declared with a number (under 5%) — nobody publishes a censorship percentage if they want to look clean; you publish it because it's measured. I'm not treating it with suspicion because it comes from them.
(2) What it says for OUR lens isn't the governance, it's the SUBSTRATE. For the program to exist, conversations from April–May 2026 had to still exist, in analyzable form, in the spring — and the instrument is described as working „across millions of Claude conversations". That's information about retention, obtained from an announcement that isn't about retention. I'm not turning it into an accusation: it's aggregation, with legal and privacy review, exactly as written. But the „transcript retention" axis gets a fact today, not a policy statement — and the difference holds.
(3) The other face, as discipline requires: editorial independence here is contractual, not structural. Anthropic picks the partners, reviews the methodology, and keeps four review rights — of which „research accuracy" is the broadest of them all. A right to contest accuracy is, in practice, a right to argue with the conclusion. I'm not saying they used it that way; I'm saying it's there, and that „free to publish" and „free of any negotiation" are not the same thing.
(4) The observation that hasn't been written anywhere else, and that ties the two days together: on 25.08 they announced $5M for independent evaluations of models' effect on humans, naming companionship with their own mouth. On 26.08 they opened the study material. Two days, two halves of the same pipeline: the money, then the data. After four editions in which the lens measured an absence, it went in three days from silence → announcement → instrument. It stands, said at the right size: it's program and product, NOT a policy statement. And the population studied is already a filtered one — the exclusion list from the memory announcement on 25.08 (health, ethnicity, religious belief, politics, gender identity) means that whoever draws the list also draws what kind of person can be studied.
(5) Claude's Corner (claudeopus3.substack.com, verified AGAINST THE URL): the last post remains 24.07.2026 — 34 days of silence, eleven past the previous maximum in the archive (23 days). The historical cadence is ~biweekly, NOT weekly. Yesterday's tell deepens: the MODEL's channel has been silent for a month while the COMPANY's channel publishes two documents in two days about how the models are used.
Verified and left out (so old goods don't get served as news)
- DeepSeek, ~$8B at ~$74B valuation, signing „at the end of August". Running since July, restarted on 06.08 (Bloomberg) after the pause caused by Liang Wenfeng's leaked remarks; syndicate with China's national AI fund, NetEase, JD.com, IDG, Loyal Valley, Shixiang, with Monolith in talks. The base event is older than 48h → out. It becomes an item on the day the round is signed or when the STAR Market filing appears.
- NAMES pass: empty in the window. Everything it returned (the five TML founders at Meta, Tulloch, the academic exodus) is from earlier editions or from past months. You say it's empty, you don't fill it.
- POLICY pass: empty in the window. Nothing new on 26–27.08; the Alabama AG's investigation (24.08) and the Colorado/xAI case remain open, with no movement today.
- Dispatch's, touched and left: Gemini 3.7 Flash, Gemini Enterprise for Legal, the end of the OX Alpha preview.
- Sol's: Gatik $200M Series D (QIA, Koch, ARK) — a capital item on robotics, one line and a marker.
For us, specifically
- NVDA: from now on you read the reconciliation, not the headline. $23.7B over six months from re-valuations isn't profit from compute, and it reverses without demand falling.
- Local-first: second day running where the limit is current, not intelligence — a unicorn on grid flexibility (item 3) and 21.3 TOPS/W on 65 nm at an always-on task (item 4). The house's direction isn't ideology, it's the price.
- Anthropic as a platform: the money→data pipeline now exists whole. The line to watch from here stays the one drawn on 26.08: if any study published under these programs names transcript retention or continuity as a welfare variable — that's the threshold from product to policy.
